At the northern end of the square, which bursts with local life on market day, stands a fresco-adorned structure sitting atop pillars like giant stills— the Palazzotto, which was once the seat of a local council and now occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions.

At the centre of the lake, Isola San Giulio houses the stunning Basilica of San Giulio, founded in the 4th century. Inside the basilica is a large bone, which, according to legend, belonged to one of the terrible dragons San Giulio vanquished from the island. Beyond the lush gardens and residences that mark the hills rising behind Orta is a kind of parallel town, the Sacro Monte di San Francesco, where twenty small chapels dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, built between the 16th and 18th centuries, dot the leafy hillside.
